Late Night Camping by Raedrob Late Night Camping by Raedrob
A couple of drawings back I really tried to put some serious effort into a background.
I wanted to give it a shot again, with a night time setting.
This gave me the perfect oppurtunity to play around with the colour blue and contrasts occuring due to the dark night and the light from the lamp.
I spent a lot of time on the two trees in the forgound, and I think they turned out pretty nice.
They are supposed to be pines, another addition to the common trees where I live (I like pine aswell as birch :P).
I used the standard brush and pen tool in SAI all the way, so creating texture was a real challenge.
Sooooooo much time was spent on this. I didn't note how much time, but I spent several respectably long sessions through at least a week.
I hope you enjoy the painting! :D

"Suddenly as the hydra was upon them, their cutie marks spontaneously changed into Purina checkerboards." The background is wonderful and makes for a wonderful nighttime scene, the perfect kind to spend camping with a friend. Applejack's expression is priceless, and you can tell just from the silhouette that Dash is somewhat bemused as to why her friend is suddenly so scared.

The lantern did come out looking pretty nice, and though not typical Ponyville (or Equestria) banded-style it still has the charm of the cover wires looks around the glass; the glow looks pretty good too against the surroundings.

Now, as for the foreground stuff, the flower almost look like nails, and I was actually wondering how they got pulled out of the sides of the tent until I realized what they were. Showing grass against the side of the tent was good too, but at this level of skill and detail it really needs to be shown (or at least hinted at we look farther from the tent). The trees look awesome, almost a bit "alive" in the way the branches come out like shoulders in some cases.

Despite Applejack's terror, Rainbow Dash isn't afraid of anything. Because she can just fly away at super speed if things get too bad.

Wow, that was quite the comment!
Understand that I really appreciate this kind of feedback.
Getting to know what worked and what could have worked better is just what artists look for in comments and feedback.
I thank you for taking going this detailed into my painting! Kudos! :D

Considering all the hard work that artists put into some of their work the least I can do is once in a while say what parts I like — and if something doesn't look right then why not try to help? (I try to be nice though.)
